lots of americans and europeans are getting obese these days because of over-eating. people should be controlling what they eat or they should workout their body to burn fat.

There are very minimal chances of complications with the lap band surgery but it does happen. As for gaining the weight back - maybe your friend wasn't able to adapt to the lap band diet as well as she would have liked too.

Hey Lisa,

Thanks a lot for providing great detail into lap band costs around the Washington area. The prices we included were more general for all of the US and weren't too State specific so thanks for taking the time to add some insight. Glad to hear your surgery was such a success!

The prices you list for the US, starting at 20K, are high. You can get Lap Band Surgery from the premier Lap BAND Only practice in Washington, DC area (Virginia) for 15K and that includes fills for life, an in office Exray for Barium Swallows and a year of continued followup care monthly.... They did mine and two of my friends and are fantastic. And even the hospitals don't charge more than 15k here in their Bariatric Surgical Centers....

A very good synopsis of Lapband Vs. Gastric bypass. It should be noted also that weight loss is a bit slower and not a drastric the first year as with the RNY procedure. Also the lapband is adjustable by injecting saline into a port placed just under the skin usually below your right ribcage. It takes a few adjustments the first year to get to your "sweet spot".

However at the end of the 2 yr mark most patients have equal amount of weight loss, only the lapband is much safer if you are willing to follow the restrictions and chew, chew, chew your food.

Lots more information on this and oher weightloss materials can be found at www.obesityhelp.com you may remove the link if that is againt the post rules here. Research very thoroughly which procedure is right for you & your lifestyle. I chose the lapband after 2 years of tireless research and am thrilled with the results a year and a half later. But beware any surgery carries risk. Do your homework.

Great article!!
